Wood Energy Contracting Kirchdorf, Bruck/Mur - Austria
13 rural enterprises established an association for selling heat
"Regional energy production" was the aim of the municipality Pernegg, situated in the upper part of Styria, when some years ago they asked the regional owners of forests, if there would be interest to join the construction and operation of wood heating systems. In answer 13 rural enterprises created the Heat Delivery Community Pernegg.
The project Wood Energy Contracting Kirchdorf is already the second wood heating system which has been realised and operated by this heat delivery community. The municipality together with a regional consulting company for wood energy system called "Regionalenergie Steiermark" approached the housing co-operative and the future residents, with the proposal to realise a wood heating system. The idea to be independent from oil was one of the motives which made them choose the wood heating system. Because of the direct neighbourhood to the public nursery school and a further, planned complex of residential buildings, the connection of these buildings to the wood heating system was foreseen.
After the "Yes" to the wood heating, the project realisation could start. The boiler supplier was selected in the framework of a call for tenders organised by the municipality, and the members of the heat delivery community started with the construction of the boiler and storage room. A space-saving spiral staircase leads down to the boiler room with the 150 kW boiler, and in front of the house there is the cover of the sub surface storage with a capacity of 70 m3, which is filled 1-2 times per week in winter. Within two years of operation the plant has been functioning properly. Currently the operators are searching a suitable remote control system to control the operation of the plant also from home.
The sole weak point: the capacity of 150 kW is for heating 26 apartments and the nursery school. At the moment the plant is operating only at 100 kW, as 12 of the 26 apartments have not been constructed yet.
Nevertheless, the installation of the wood heating plant was worth while. The heat customers are content with their decision for the wood heating and the service provided by the heat delivery community, and they are proud to contribute actively to environmental protection. For the members of the heat delivery community the service "Heating large buildings" became an important source of income - recently the invested in the construction of a storage hall for wood chips. And: the municipalities benefits from its green image and a higher regional value added.
Finally, a few words about the organisation of the heat delivery community. The tasks are clearly structured, and are divided up equally among the members. The annual amount of wood chips delivered per year by each member, depends on share of its participation at the investment costs.
